Is Valturna Safe for Breastfeeding Women?
Valturna® (
aliskiren and valsartan) is a prescription medication used to
treat high blood pressure. It is not clear if this medication is safe for use while breastfeeding. Therefore, you should talk with your healthcare provider before taking Valturna if you are breastfeeding or plan to start.
More Information on Breastfeeding While Taking Valturna
No research has been done to see if either of the two active ingredients in Valturna pass through breast milk in humans, although both medications are known to pass through breast milk in rats. The manufacturer recommends against taking this medication while breastfeeding.
Although there is no evidence that Valturna will cause problems if used during breastfeeding, there is also no evidence to suggest that it can be used safely while breastfeeding. Due to the lack of evidence either way, other
blood pressure medications may be preferred for women who are nursing.
Talking With Your Healthcare Provider
You should discuss breastfeeding and Valturna with your healthcare provider.
Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
