Generic Valturna

At this time, you cannot buy a generic version of Valturna (aliskiren and valsartan). The first patent has already expired, so it's possible that a later-expiring patent is protecting brand-name Valturna from generic competition. The next patent is set to expire in July 2018.

Can I Buy Generic Valturna?

Valturna® (aliskiren and valsartan) is a prescription medication used to treat high blood pressure (known medically as hypertension). It contains two different blood pressure medications combined in a single tablet.
Valturna is made by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation. It is currently under the protection of a patent that prevents any generic Valturna from being manufactured in the United States.
In April 2012, it was decided that this medication should no longer be available, due to the risks it poses to people with diabetes or with moderate-to-severe kidney problems. Production will officially cease in July 2012.

When Will Generic Valturna Be Available?

The first patent for Valturna expired in March 2012. However, no generic versions are available yet. This suggests that one or more-later expiring patents are still protecting the drug from generic competition. The next patent for Valturna is set to expire in July 2018. This is the earliest predictable date that a generic version could become available.
However, other circumstances could come up to extend or shorten the exclusivity period. This could include such things as other patents for specific Valturna uses or lawsuits. Once the patent expires, there may be several companies that manufacture a generic Valturna drug.

Valturna: A Combination Medication

As mentioned, Valturna contains two medications: aliskiren (Tekturna®) and valsartan (Diovan®). For many people (depending on insurance coverage), it is less expensive to take Valturna rather than the two medications separately, even though generic Valturna is not available.
