Twynsta Uses

How Does Twynsta Work?

Telmisartan, one of the components of Twynsta, belongs to a class of medications called angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). Angiotensin II is a vasoconstrictor. This means that it causes the blood vessels to narrow, which increases blood pressure. Telmisartan works by blocking angiotensin II receptors, thus preventing angiotensin II from narrowing the blood vessels. Because the blood vessels stay relaxed, the blood pressure lowers.
Amlodipine, the other component of Twynsta, is part of a class of drugs called calcium channel blockers. It helps to slow down the rate at which calcium moves into the heart and blood vessel walls. This, in turn, helps to relax the blood vessels, which improves blood flow and lowers blood pressure. It also makes it easier for the heart to pump blood.

Can Children Use It?

Twynsta is not approved for use in people younger than 18 years of age. It has not been adequately studied in this age group.

Can Older Adults Use Twynsta?

In clinical studies, Twynsta side effects and blood pressure lowering effects were similar in older and younger adults. However, this may not be an appropriate choice as an initial medication in people 75 years of age or older. People in this age group should be started on a lower dose of amlodipine (one of the components of Twynsta).
