Generic Twynsta

At this time, a generic version of Twynsta (telmisartan/amlodipine) is not available. The first patent for this medication is set to expire in January 2014, which is the earliest possible date that a generic version could become available. It is important to note that telmisartan/amlodipine is the "generic name" for Twynsta, not a generic version of it.

Can I Buy Generic Twynsta?

Twynsta® (telmisartan/amlodipine) is a prescription medication used to treat high blood pressure, known medically as hypertension. It is a combination of two high blood pressure medications -- telmisartan (Micardis®) and amlodipine (Norvasc®).

Twynsta is made by Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. It is currently under the protection of a patent, as well as exclusivity rights, that prevent any generic Twynsta from being manufactured in the United States.

When Will a Generic Version Be Available?

The first patent for Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc., expires in January 2014. This is the earliest predictable date that a generic version could become available.

However, other circumstances could come up to extend or shorten this exclusivity period. This could include such things as lawsuits or other patents for specific Twynsta uses. Once the drug goes off-patent, there may be several companies that manufacture a generic Twynsta medication.

Is Telmisartan and Amlodipine a Generic Twynsta?

No -- telmisartan and amlodipine are the active ingredients in Twynsta, not a generic version of it.
What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name."

The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version, the original medicine must have gone off-patent and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
