What Is Torsemide Used For?

Some people may wonder, "What is torsemide used for?" A healthcare provider may prescribe torsemide to control high blood pressure and treat fluid retention in adults. Torsemide is not a cure for these conditions, but it can help to treat them by increasing the amount of water and salt the kidneys remove from the blood. This decrease in blood volume can help to lower blood pressure and help the body get rid of extra fluid. There are currently no off-label uses of torsemide.

What Is Torsemide Used For?

 Torsemide (Demadex®) is a prescription medication that has been licensed to treat a couple of conditions. These specific torsemide uses include:
 
o Kidney disease or kidney failure (renal failure). 
Torsemide for High Blood Pressure
A blood pressure reading consists of two numbers -- for example: 120/80. The top number is known as the systolic blood pressure, and the bottom number is the diastolic blood pressure. High blood pressure is defined as an average blood pressure higher than 140/90, with multiple blood pressure readings.
 
In clinical studies, torsemide has been shown to significantly lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure. By lowering blood pressure, torsemide can decrease the risk of developing health problems, such as a stroke, heart disease, or congestive heart failure, that occur with long-term high blood pressure (see Effects of High Blood Pressure). However, torsemide is not a cure for high blood pressure.
