Toprol-XL Uses

Uses of Toprol-XL most commonly involve the treatment of conditions related to the heart and blood vessels, including high blood pressure and congestive heart failure. The medication is also used to treat symptoms of angina. "Off-label" Toprol-XL uses may include the treatment of conditions such as hyperthyroidism. Toprol-XL is not approved for use in children; however, it is sometimes used off-label to treat children with certain conditions.

What Is Toprol-XL Used For?

Toprol-XL® (metoprolol succinate) has been licensed to treat a number of conditions. These Toprol-XL uses include:

High Blood Pressure
A blood pressure reading consists of two numbers (for example, 120/80 mmHg). The top number is known as the systolic blood pressure, and the bottom number is the diastolic blood pressure. High blood pressure (hypertension) is defined as an average blood pressure higher than 140/90 mmHg with multiple blood pressure readings.

In clinical studies, Toprol-XL has been shown to significantly lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The higher the dose of Toprol-XL, the greater the drop in blood pressure is expected to be. By lowering blood pressure, Toprol-XL can decrease the risks that occur with long-term high blood pressure (see Effects of High Blood Pressure). Toprol-XL does not, however, cure high blood pressure.
