Dosing With Toprol-XL: An Introduction
The dose of
Toprol-XL® (
metoprolol succinate) your healthcare provider prescribes will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:
- Your age
- The medical condition being treated
- Other medical conditions you may have
- Other medications you may be taking
- How you respond to Toprol-XL.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.
Toprol-XL Dosage for High Blood Pressure
Dosing guidelines for Toprol-XL generally recommend 25 mg to 100 mg a day to start for people with
high blood pressure (
hypertension). After a week or more, your healthcare provider may increase or decrease your dosage as necessary. He or she may also add a diuretic (a "water pill") or another
blood pressure medication if your
blood pressure is not controlled by Toprol-XL alone.
The maximum recommended daily dose of Toprol-XL for this use is 400 mg.
Toprol-XL Dose for Angina
The recommended starting dosage for people with
angina is usually Toprol-XL 100 mg once a day. After one week, your healthcare provider may increase or decrease the Toprol-XL dose, depending on your response to the drug and/or side effects you experience. Your healthcare provider may increase your dosage until your
angina symptoms improve, until you develop bothersome or intolerable side effects, or until the maximum daily dose of 400 mg per day is reached.
The maximum daily dose for treating angina symptoms is Toprol-XL 400 mg.
