Your healthcare provider may prescribe
Toprol-XL® (
metoprolol succinate) to treat certain heart or blood vessel conditions, such as
high blood pressure,
angina, or
congestive heart failure. Of the four strengths of
Toprol-XL on the market, the 25 mg tablets are the lowest strength available. However, your dosage will depend on several factors, such as your age, the condition being treated, other medical conditions you may have, and other medications you are taking.
For example, the recommended starting dosage for
treating high blood pressure is Toprol-XL 25 mg to 100 mg a day. After a week or more, your healthcare provider may increase or decrease your dosage as necessary. When treating congestive
heart failure, the recommended starting dosage is 12.5 mg to 25 mg of Toprol-XL each day.
You should take Toprol with food or immediately following a meal. Make sure to take your dosage at the same time each day to maintain even levels of the medicine in your blood.
