The recommended starting dosage of
Toprol-XL® (
metoprolol succinate) for
treating high blood pressure is typically 25 mg to 100 mg of
Toprol-XL a day. After a week or more, your healthcare provider may increase or decrease your dosage as necessary. However, your dosage will depend on several factors, such as your age, other medical conditions you may have, and other medications you are taking.
Toprol-XL can also be prescribed to treat other conditions related to the heart and blood vessels, such as
angina symptoms and
congestive heart failure. The recommended starting dosage for people with
angina is usually Toprol-XL 100 mg once a day. The recommended starting dosage of Toprol-XL for people with congestive
heart failure is normally 12.5 mg to 25 mg once a day.
You should take Toprol-XL tablets with food or immediately after a meal. You should not crush or chew them, as they are extended-release tablets. However, they may be cut in half (along the score line) without causing any problems. It is important that you not stop taking Toprol-XL without first discussing it with your healthcare provider. Stopping the drug abruptly increases the risk for serious side effects.
