Toprol Risks

Although many people do not experience any problems while taking
Toprol® (short for Toprol-XL®), this medication is not free of risks. For example, Toprol can cause problems such as:

  • Slow heart rate
  • Tiredness
  • Dizziness
  • Diarrhea
  • Itching or unexplained rash
  • Depression
  • Shortness of breath.

If any problems do occur, they tend to be minor and either require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider. However, there are some potentially serious Toprol risks that require immediate medical attention. Contact your healthcare provider if you experience serious problems, such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, or confusion.

Other warnings and precautions apply to women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as people who have certain allergies (including allergies to foods, dyes, or preservatives). Also, you may not be able to take Toprol if you have certain medical conditions, such as kidney disease, diabetes, or asthma.
