Toprol-XL® is a medication that is licensed for the treatment of congestive heart failure and high blood pressure (hypertension). It is also approved for treating symptoms of angina. The medicine works to decrease heart rate, blood pressure levels, and the workload of the heart by reversing the effects of certain stress hormones in the body. Toprol-XL, which comes in a tablet form, is usually taken once a day and is available in several different strengths. Common side effects of Toprol-XL include itching, dizziness, slow heart rate, and diarrhea.
