Systolic Blood Pressure

Borderline Systolic Pressure

If the systolic blood pressure is between 120 and 140, the person has a condition called prehypertension.

Factors Affecting Systolic Blood Pressure

Systolic blood pressure changes frequently in the course of a day. Systolic blood pressure can change within only a few minutes based on factors such as:

  • Amount of tension
  • Posture
  • Nicotine use
  • Level of exercise.

Because of these types of changes, it's best to use more than one blood pressure reading to figure out your average systolic blood pressure.

It's important to look at your overall health, lifestyle, diet, and family history when comparing your blood pressure to what's considered "normal blood pressure." These factors may cause you to have a higher or lower blood pressure than what's generally considered normal.
