Drug Interactions With Propranolol XL

Clonidine
If you take both clonidine and propranolol XL, stopping clonidine (without stopping propranolol XL) could increase the risk of dangerously high blood pressure, strokes, and other serious problems. It is advised to stop taking propranolol XL several days before you gradually reduce the dose of clonidine. Do not attempt this without the approval and supervision of your healthcare provider.

Digoxin
Combining propranolol XL with digoxin may cause a dangerously slow heart rate (bradycardia). You may need to be monitored very closely if you take these medications together. In some cases, it is not recommended to combine propranolol XL with digoxin.

Haloperidol
Low blood pressure and cardiac arrest have been reported as the result of combining haloperidol with propranolol (the active ingredient in propranolol XL). Check with your healthcare provider before using theses medications together.

Medications That Decrease Propranolol XL Metabolism
Propranolol XL is metabolized by various liver enzymes. Some other medications slow down the activity of these enzymes, causing an increase in the level of propranolol XL in the blood. This could potentially lead to serious propranolol XL side effects. Different medications inhibit the enzyme to different extents; some interactions may be minor, while others may be quite severe. Check with your healthcare provider before combining propranolol XL with such medications.

Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)
Combining propranolol XL with an MAOI may increase the risk of very low blood pressure. Check with your healthcare provider before taking these medications together.

Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)
NSAIDs may decrease the blood pressure-lowering effects of propranolol XL. For your particular situation, talk with your healthcare provider about using NSAIDs and propranolol XL together.
