Nifedipine Side Effects
Some of the more common side effects of nifedipine include water retention, headaches, and fatigue. Most people tolerate the medication well -- if side effects do occur, they are typically minor. However, some people may experience more serious nifedipine side effects. If you experience side effects such as chest pain or signs of an allergic reaction, contact your healthcare provider right away.
As with any medicine, side effects are possible with nifedipine. However, not everyone who takes the drug will experience problems. In fact, most people tolerate it well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can be treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with nifedipine. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)
Nifedipine has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials, in which a group of people taking the drug have side effects documented and compared to another group not taking the medicine. This way, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine.
In these studies, the most common nifedipine side effects included:
- Swelling or water retention (edema)
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Muscle cramps or shakiness (tremor)
- Dry mouth (see Nifedipine and Dry Mouth)
- Impotence, also known as erectile dysfunction or ED (see Nifedipine and Erectile Dysfunction).
There are many different forms of nifedipine, and side effects may vary, depending on the particular product being used.
