Blood Pressure Home > Twynsta Uses

Twynsta is prescribed for the treatment of high blood pressure. It is only approved for use in adults age 18 and older. As a combination medication, Twynsta works by relaxing the blood vessels and improving blood flow. Clinical studies have shown that using Twynsta is more effective at lowering blood pressure than when either of its two components is used alone.

What Is Twynsta Used For?

Twynsta® (telmisartan/amlodipine) is a prescription medication licensed to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It is a combination of two other blood pressure medications -- telmisartan (Micardis®) and amlodipine (Norvasc®).
Twynsta may be a good option for people who are already taking both telmisartan and amlodipine together, or who are taking one of these medications without adequate blood pressure control. Twynsta can also be used as the first medication in people who have high blood pressure and will likely need more than one medicine.

Using Twynsta for High Blood Pressure

Blood pressure is a measure of the force inside your blood vessels -- both while the heart is beating and while it is relaxed. High blood pressure occurs when the force is too high. With this condition, the heart has to work harder to pump blood through the body.
A blood pressure reading consists of two numbers: a systolic number (the top number) and a diastolic number (the bottom number). The systolic number is a measure of blood pressure when the heart is beating. The diastolic number is a measure of blood pressure when the heart is relaxed.
High blood pressure is usually defined as an average blood pressure higher than 140/90, over multiple blood pressure readings. However, in some cases, the goal might be lower. For example, experts normally recommended that people with diabetes keep their blood pressure below 130/80.
Most people with high blood pressure do not have any symptoms. However, this condition can have a negative effect on many of the body's vital organs, including the eyes, heart, brain, and kidneys. Because of these negative effects, untreated high blood pressure may lead to serious health problems, such as:

In clinical studies, Twynsta has been shown to be more effective at lowering blood pressure than either of the individual components (telmisartan or amlodipine) alone. By lowering blood pressure, Twynsta can reduce the risk of developing the health problems associated with long-term hypertension.
This medication is not a cure for high blood pressure, however. If it is stopped, it is likely that blood pressure will increase. Twynsta may be used alone or in combination with other blood pressure medications.
