You can find generic Toprol-XL sold under the name Metoprolol Succinate extended-release tablets. As with the brand-name version, the generic versions are used to treat certain conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels.

Can I Buy Generic Toprol-XL?

Toprol-XL® (metoprolol succinate) is a prescription medication that is used for lowering high blood pressure (hypertension), relieving angina symptoms, and treating congestive heart failure. The medication may also be used "off-label" for other reasons (see Toprol-XL Uses for more information).

Toprol-XL is part of a class of medicines called beta-adrenergic blocking agents, or beta blockers for short. It helps to block specific types of beta receptors called beta-1 receptors. By blocking these receptors, Toprol-XL causes the reverse effect of stress hormones such as adrenaline (epinephrine). It decreases heart rate and both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, as well as the workload of the heart, which means that the heart requires less blood and oxygen to work properly.

The medication was originally developed by AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals. The patent for brand-name Toprol-XL has since expired, however, and generic versions are now available.
