Blood Pressure Home > Generic Tarka

It is now possible to buy Tarka in generic form. The generic version comes in three strengths and is made by Glenmark Generics. Only one strength of Tarka (1 mg/240 mg) is unavailable in generic form at this time.

Can I Buy Generic Tarka?

Tarka® (trandolapril/verapamil hydrochloride ER) is a prescription medication that has been licensed to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It is a combination of two medicines -- trandolapril (sold under the brand name Mavik®) and verapamil hydrochloride ER (sold under several brand names and as generic verapamil ER).
Brand-name Tarka is currently sold by Abbott Laboratories. However, a generic version is also available, made by Glenmark Generics.

Available Strengths

Generic Tarka is available in the following strengths:
  • Trandolapril/verapamil ER 2 mg/180 mg -- which has 2 mg of trandolapril and 180 mg of verapamil
  • Trandolapril/verapamil ER 2 mg/240 mg -- which has 2 mg of trandolapril and 240 mg of verapamil
  • Trandolapril/verapamil ER 4 mg/240 mg -- which has 4 mg of trandolapril and 240 mg of verapamil.
Tarka 1 mg/240 mg is not yet available in generic form.

Is Generic Trandolapril/Verapamil ER as Good as Tarka?

All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns a rating to each one.
An "AB" rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent to a brand-name medication. The generic versions of Tarka currently available have an "AB" rating, meaning they should be equivalent to brand-name Tarka.
However, generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients than the brand-name medication. This might include fillers, dyes, or other ingredients that may cause problems for people with allergies or sensitivities.
