In most cases, side effects of Calan are minor and can easily be treated by you or your doctor. The most common ones include constipation, dizziness, and nausea. If you develop more serious side effects (such as fainting, significant water retention, or hallucinations), you should contact your healthcare provider right away. Rare side effects can include a dry mouth, hair loss, and impotence.
An Introduction to Calan Side EffectsAs with any medicine, there are possible side effects with Calan® (verapamil hydrochloride). However, not everyone who takes the medication will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. When side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Common Side Effects of CalanCalan has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials, in which the side effects of a group of people taking the drug are documented and then compared to the side effects of another group not taking the medicine. As a result, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine.
In these studies, the most common Calan side effects included:
- Constipation -- in up to 7.3 percent of people
- Dizziness -- up to 3.3 percent
- Nausea -- up to 2.7 percent
- Low blood pressure (hypotension) -- up to 2.5 percent
- Headaches -- up to 2.2 percent.
