Blood Pressure Home > Benicar for High Blood Pressure

Healthcare providers often recommend Benicar® (olmesartan medoxomil) for high blood pressure (hypertension). The prescription medication is not a cure for this condition, but can be used to lower both systolic and diastolic blood pressures.
A blood pressure reading consists of two numbers -- for example, 120/80. The top number is the systolic blood pressure, and the bottom number is the diastolic blood pressure. High blood pressure is defined as an average blood pressure higher than 140/90, with multiple blood pressure readings.
Based on the results of clinical studies, Benicar has been shown to be quite effective for high blood pressure. In fact, the higher the dose, the greater the drop in blood pressure tends to be. As a result, Benicar can decrease the risks that long-term hypertension presents (see Effects of High Blood Pressure).
