If certain medications are combined with Avalide, drug interactions are a possible concern. These interactions can affect the levels of some drugs in your blood, decrease their effectiveness, and increase your risk for side effects. Among the medicines that can potentially react with Avalide are barbiturates, corticosteroids, NSAIDs, and narcotic pain relievers.

An Overview of Interactions With Avalide

Avalide® (irbesartan/HCTZ) may potentially react with many other medications. Some of the drugs that may lead to interactions with Avalide include but are not limited to:
 
 
  • Allopurinol (Zyloprim®)
  • Amifostine (Ethyol®)
  • Barbiturates, such as:
    • Amobarbital (Amytal®)
    • Butalbital (Fioricet®, Fiorinal®)
    • Pentobarbital (Nembutal®)
    • Phenobarbital (Luminal®)
    • Secobarbital (Seconal®)
 
 
  • Calcium supplements or calcium-containing antacids
  • Calcitriol (Rocaltrol®, Calcijex®)
  • Corticosteroids, such as:
    • Betamethasone (Celestone®)
    • Cortisone
    • Dexamethasone (Decadron®)
    • Fludrocortisone (Florinef®)
    • Hydrocortisone (Cortef®)
    • Methylprednisolone (Depo-Medrol®, Medrol®)
    • Prednisolone (Orapred®, Pediapred®)
    • Prednisone
    • Triamcinolone (Kenalog®, Aristospan®)
 
 
 
  • Other blood pressure medications
  • Pentoxifylline (Trental®)
  • Potassium-containing products, such as:
    • Potassium chloride (K-Dur®, Klor-Con®, Micro-K®)
    • Potassium citrate (Urocit-K®, Polycitra-K®)
    • Potassium gluconate
    • Potassium phosphate (Neutra-Phos-K®, K-Phos®)
    • Salt substitutes (used to flavor food)
 
 
  • Pressors, such as:
    • Dopamine (Intropin®)
    • Dobutamine (Dobutrex®)
    • Epinephrine (Adrenalin®, EpiPen®)
    • Norepinephrine (Levophed®)
