An Introduction to Loniten Side Effects
Just like any medicine,
Loniten® (
minoxidil oral) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Loniten. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)
Common Side Effects of Loniten
For many medications, the prescribing information carefully explains the exact percentage of side effects that were seen in clinical trials.
However, the prescribing information for almost all older medications, including Loniten, contains vague information on potential side effects. Therefore, it can be difficult to know exactly how common some side effects may be.
The most common reactions to Loniten may include:
- Growth and darkening of fine body hair
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Slight weight gain of two to three pounds.
Hair growth and darkening is a Loniten side effect, occurring in about 80 percent of people. You may notice this side effect about three to six weeks after starting the medication. Areas of the body most commonly affected include:
- The forehead
- Temples
- Between the eyebrows
- Upper cheeks
- Back
- Arms
- Legs
- Scalp.
This side effect is not permanent and will resolve within one to six months after stopping the medication.
In addition, breast tenderness is a rare, but possible side effect of
Loniten use, occurring in less than 1 percent of people taking the medication. It can occur in both men and women.
