Loniten Dosage

For most adults with high blood pressure, the initial dosage of Loniten is 5 mg once daily. Your healthcare provider may gradually increase this amount every three days, if necessary, up to a maximum of 100 mg a day. When using this medication in children, the amount will depend on their age and weight.

An Introduction to Dosing With Loniten

The dosage of Loniten® (minoxidil oral) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:

  • Your blood pressure
  • How you respond to the medication
  • Your age
  • Your weight (in children)
  • Other medications you are taking
  • Other medical conditions you may have.

As is always the case, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

Loniten Dosage for Hypertension

The initial Loniten dosage for treating hypertension (high blood pressure) in people older than 12 years of age is 5 mg once daily. The amount can then be increased, no more often than every three days, until blood pressure is controlled. It is recommended that dosages be increased first to 10 mg a day, then 20 mg a day, and then 40 mg a day, if needed. The maximum recommended dose of Loniten is 100 mg a day.

Loniten dosing guidelines in children younger than 12 years of age are based on body weight. In this age group, the initial dosage for treating hypertension is 0.2 mg per kg of body weight (0.09 mg per pound) once daily. The amount can then be increased by 50 to 100 percent, no more often than every three days, until blood pressure is controlled.

The typical effective dose of Loniten for children younger than 12 years of age is between 0.25 mg and 1 mg per kg of body weight a day (0.11 mg and 0.45 mg per pound). The maximum recommended dosage in children younger than 12 years old is 50 mg a day.

Loniten is usually given once or twice a day, depending on how much your blood pressure needs to be lowered. Higher blood pressure reductions will usually require twice-daily Loniten dosing.

Although it is generally recommended that dose increases be separated by at least three days to allow the full effects of the new dose to occur, in some cases, a more rapid reduction in blood pressure is needed. In these cases, dosages may be increased every six hours, with very careful monitoring.
