Levatol Side Effects

Fatigue, dizziness, and headaches are common problems that have been reported with Levatol. Side effects of the medication are generally mild and, in most cases, either do not require treatment or can be treated easily. However, some reactions are potentially serious and should be reported to a healthcare provider immediately, including rapid weight gain, fainting, or chest pain.

An Introduction to Levatol Side Effects

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with Levatol® (penbutolol sulfate). However, not everyone who takes the medication will experience problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Levatol. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list of Levatol side effects with you.)

Common Side Effects of Levatol

Levatol has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people taking Levatol were documented and then compared to those that occurred in another group of people taking either a placebo (a "sugar pill" with no active ingredients) or a different but similar blood pressure medication. This way, it is possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the group not taking Levatol.
In these studies, the most common side effects that occurred more frequently with Levatol than with the placebo included:
  • Headaches -- in up to 7.8 percent of people
  • Dizziness -- up to 4.9 percent
  • Fatigue -- up to 4.4 percent
  • Nausea -- up to 4.3 percent.
Other common Levatol side effects (occurring in 0.5 to 3.3 percent of people) included:
It is important to note that some of these common side effects can also be signs of more serious problems (see the following section for more information).
