Lasix Drug Interactions Explained
The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when
Lasix is taken with any of the drugs listed above.
Aminoglycoside Antibiotics
Lasix should not be combined with aminoglycoside antibiotics unless absolutely necessary. Taking these two drugs together can increase the chance of permanent hearing loss.
Other Blood Pressure Medicine
When taking Lasix with another
high blood pressure medication, your
blood pressure may decrease too much. In addition, combining Lasix with certain types of
blood pressure medications may increase the risk of kidney problems. In order to minimize the chances of these drug interactions, your healthcare provider may monitor you more closely and/or change the dose of either medicine.
Chloral Hydrate
There have been reports of flushing, sweating attacks, restlessness, nausea, increased blood pressure, and rapid heart rate when intravenous Lasix was given to people who had taken chloral hydrate within the past 24 hours. In general, this combination is not recommended.
Corticosteroids
Taking Lasix with corticosteroids may increase your risk of low potassium levels (hypokalemia). Your healthcare provider should check your potassium levels periodically during treatment and may need to take steps to correct your potassium levels, if necessary.
Cyclosporine
Combining Lasix with
cyclosporine may increase the risk of gout, since this combination can lead to high levels of uric acid.
Digoxin (Digitek, Lanoxin)
Lasix should be used carefully in people taking
digoxin. It can cause low potassium levels (hypokalemia), which can be especially dangerous for people taking digoxin.
