Labetalol hydrochloride is a prescription medication that belongs to the class of drugs known as beta blockers. It is most commonly used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults. The medication is sold under the brand name Trandate®; generic versions of the drug are also available.
 
Although the medication cannot cure high blood pressure, it can significantly decrease both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. By lowering blood pressure, labetalol can decrease the risk of developing health problems, such as a heart attack or stroke, that can result from long-term high blood pressure.
 
It is available in several different strengths, including 100 mg, 200 mg, and 300 mg. Examples of side effects associated with the drug include nausea, heartburn or indigestion, dizziness, and fatigue.
