Labetalol Side Effects

Common Labetalol Side Effects

Labetalol has been studied extensively in clinical trials, with thousands of people worldwide having been evaluated. In these studies, side effects are always documented and compared to those that occur in a similar group of people taking a placebo (a "sugar pill" with no active ingredient) or a different blood pressure medication.

This way, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they occur, and how they compare to the group not taking labetalol.

Based on these studies, the most common side effects of labetalol include:

  • Nausea -- in up to 19 percent of people
  • Dizziness -- up to 16 percent
  • A slow heart rate -- up to 12 percent
  • Fatigue -- up to 10 percent
  • Nasal stuffiness -- up to 6 percent.

Other common problems (occurring in more than 1 percent of people) include but are not limited to:

  • Vomiting
  • Numbness, burning, tingling, or other unusual sensations
  • Heartburn or indigestion
The chances of developing side effects will increase as the labetalol dosage is increased.
