Labetalol (
Trandate®) passes through breast milk in humans. It is a "
beta blocker" medication that is used to
lower blood pressure. It can cause serious problems in a nursing infant. Therefore, you should talk with your healthcare provider before taking this drug if you are breastfeeding or plan to start.
Can I Take This Medicine While Breastfeeding?
In many cases, the benefits of taking labetalol while nursing outweigh the small risk this poses for the infant. While labetalol passes through breast milk in small amounts, problems such as a dangerously slow heart rate, low
blood pressure, and low blood sugar may occur. There has been one case of a slow heart rate and irregular heart rhythm in a premature breastfed newborn (born at 26 weeks) whose mother was taking this medication.
