More Information on Breastfeeding and Inderide
Propranolol passes through breast milk, but only in very small amounts.
Based on studies in lactating women taking propranolol, the amount expected to reach a breastfed infant is thought to be too small to cause problems. In fact, propranolol is considered one of the safest beta blockers for use in mothers who are breastfeeding because so little of it passes through breast milk.
Hydrochlorothiazide also passes through breast milk in very small amounts. Many experts consider it safe for use during breastfeeding if doses are lower than 50 mg a day. Although higher doses may not be harmful to a nursing child, they may reduce breast milk production. In fact, very high doses of HCTZ have been used to prevent milk production following childbirth.
The American Academy of Pediatrics considers both HCTZ and propranolol compatible with breastfeeding. However, the manufacturer recommends that Inderide be used with caution in women who are breastfeeding.
