Hyzaar Uses

Hyzaar is a combination of two medications -- Cozaar and hydrochlorothiazide -- and is used to lower high blood pressure in adults. The Cozaar helps to relax the blood vessels and the hydrochlorothiazide allows the kidneys to remove more salt and water from the blood, which causes a decrease in blood volume. As a result, this combination helps to reduce blood pressure and has been shown to be more effective than using either medication by itself. Hyzaar has not been approved for use in children and there are currently no universally accepted off-label Hyzaar uses.

 

Uses for Hyzaar -- An Overview

 Hyzaar® (losartan potassium-hydrochlorothiazide) is a prescription medication that has been licensed to control high blood pressure (hypertension).
 
Hyzaar for High Blood Pressure
A blood pressure reading consists of two numbers -- for example: 120/80. The top number is known as the systolic blood pressure and the bottom number is the diastolic blood pressure. High blood pressure is defined as an average blood pressure higher than 140/90, with multiple blood pressure readings.
 
Based on clinical studies, Hyzaar has been shown to significantly lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The higher the dose of Hyzaar, the greater the drop in blood pressure tended to be. By lowering blood pressure, Hyzaar can decrease the risks that occur with long-term high blood pressure (see Effects of High Blood Pressure). However, Hyzaar is not a cure for high blood pressure.
