Hydrochlorothiazide 50 mg Tablets

Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) is a prescription medicine used for treating high blood pressure and fluid retention. It comes in several different strengths, including:

  • 12.5 mg capsules
  • 25 mg tablets
  • 50 mg tablets.

The recommended starting dosage for treating high blood pressure is 25 mg once daily. If your blood pressure is not controlled at this dosage, your healthcare provider may recommend 50 mg hydrochlorothiazide tablets (one tablet per day). With each change in dosage, it may take several weeks to see the full effects of hydrochlorothiazide on lowering blood pressure.

For the treatment of fluid retention (edema), the recommended dose can vary between 25 mg and 100 mg daily (taken as a single dose or divided and taken more frequently). Some people will only need to take hydrochlorothiazide when they are experiencing water retention, while others may need to take it on a daily basis.
