Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) is a prescription medication that has been licensed to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and water retention (edema).
 
Brand names for hydrochlorothiazide include Esidrix®, HydroDIURIL®, Microzide®, and Oretic®. Since hydrochlorothiazide is a very old medication, generic hydrochlorothiazide has been available for many years. In fact, some of the brand-name versions are not available anymore.
