Research has shown that a specific diet, called the DASH diet, can help lower blood pressure. This diet focuses on eating fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy foods, while reducing the amounts of saturated fat, total fat, and cholesterol. The DASH high blood pressure diet also emphasizes whole grains, poultry, and fish. Clinical studies have shown that people who were able to lower their blood pressure the most were following the DASH diet at the lowest sodium level (1,500 milligrams per day).
