Exforge and Breastfeeding

Since no studies have been conducted on Exforge and breastfeeding, it is not known whether the drug passes through breast milk. If you are taking Exforge and breastfeeding (or thinking of breastfeeding), be sure to talk to your healthcare provider. If he or she recommends breastfeeding while taking the blood pressure medication, you should watch for any side effects in your infant.

It is unknown if Exforge® (amlodipine and valsartan) passes through breast milk in breastfeeding women. The manufacturer of Exforge does not recommend that women breastfeed while taking Exforge.

No studies have been done to see if Exforge passes through breast milk. Additionally, it is also unknown if Exforge would cause any problems in breastfed infants. If your healthcare provider recommends that you take Exforge while breastfeeding, be sure to watch for any side effects in your infant.
 
You may be wondering why no studies have been done to see if Exforge passes through breast milk. In many situations, such studies would be considered unethical. Such studies might put infants (who cannot themselves consent to these studies) at risk. In general, most information about breastfeeding and medications is obtained through cases outside of formal clinical studies.
