Exforge HCT Interactions

Carbamazepine
Combining Exforge HCT with carbamazepine may lead to dangerously low levels of sodium in the blood. If you must take these medications together, your healthcare provider will need to monitor you closely.

Cyclosporine
The amlodipine component of Exforge HCT may increase the level of cyclosporine in the blood, perhaps increasing the risk for side effects. Because it is important for cyclosporine levels to fall within a certain range, your healthcare provider may need to check your blood levels and adjust your cyclosporine dosage if you start or stop taking Exforge HCT.

Digoxin
Exforge HCT should be used carefully in people taking digoxin. Exforge HCT can cause high potassium levels (hyperkalemia), which can be especially dangerous for people taking digoxin.

Eplerenone
Combining Exforge HCT with eplerenone inhibitors can increase your risk of high potassium levels in your blood (hyperkalemia). Your healthcare provider should check your potassium levels regularly.

Lithium
Taking hydrochlorothiazide (one of the active ingredients in Exforge HCT) with lithium may increase the level of lithium in your blood, increasing your chance of lithium side effects. Generally, it is not recommended to take lithium with diuretics like hydrochlorothiazide. Your healthcare provider may need to monitor your lithium level closely and adjust your lithium dose as necessary.

Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)
Exforge HCT can interact with NSAIDs in several ways. The combination could cause your blood pressure to increase or may cause swelling (edema), especially if you have congestive heart failure (CHF). If you are elderly, have kidney disease or kidney failure, or are taking a diuretic ("water pill") or are dehydrated, taking NSAIDs and Exforge HCT together may cause kidney failure. Talk to your healthcare provider about this potential drug interaction before taking these medications together.

Potassium
While taking Exforge HCT, do not take any potassium products unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Simvastatin
Exforge HCT increases the level of simvastatin in the blood, increasing the risk of serious side effects of simvastatin. If these medications are combined, the simvastatin dosage should not exceed 20 mg per day.

Triamterene Products
Combining Exforge HCT with medications that contain triamterene can increase the risk of high potassium levels in your blood (hyperkalemia). Your healthcare provider should check your potassium levels regularly.
