Enalapril Uses

Enalapril uses may include lowering high blood pressure and treating symptoms of congestive heart failure (CHF). Other uses for enalapril involve treating left ventricular dysfunction. Sometimes, a healthcare professional may also recommend using enalapril to treat other medical conditions, such as kidney problems in patients with scleroderma.

What Is Enalapril Used For?

Enalapril, which is available as either Vasotec® or generic Enalapril Maleate tablets, has been licensed to treat a number of conditions. These enalapril uses include:

High Blood Pressure
A blood pressure reading consists of two numbers -- for example, 120/80. The top number measures the systolic blood pressure, and the bottom number refers to the diastolic blood pressure. High blood pressure is defined as an average blood pressure higher than 140/90 based on multiple blood pressure readings.

Based on clinical studies, enalapril has been shown to significantly lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The higher the dose of enalapril, the greater the drop in blood pressure tended to be. By lowering blood pressure, enalapril can decrease the risks that occur with long-term high blood pressure (see Effects of High Blood Pressure); however, enalapril is not a cure for high blood pressure.
