Diastolic Blood Pressure

Lowering Diastolic Blood Pressure

For people with high diastolic blood pressure, lifestyle changes are the first component of high blood pressure treatment. Lifestyle changes help lower diastolic blood pressure, but they also usually help improve a person's quality of life. Some lifestyle changes known to lower blood pressure include:

  • Weight loss
  • Exercise
  • Adopting a diet that emphasizes fruits and vegetables while reducing fats and cholesterol
  • Cutting down the salt in your diet
  • Drinking less alcohol.

If these lifestyle modifications do not lower diastolic blood pressure, then blood pressure medication may be recommended.
