As a heart medicine, Coreg works by decreasing
blood pressure and making the heart more efficient, which allows more blood to be pumped from the heart. Because of these effects, the drug has been shown to:
- Decrease the progression of congestive heart failure
- Improve congestive heart failure symptoms (including exercise tolerance)
- Decrease hospitalizations and loss of life from congestive heart failure.
For people who have heart failure or left ventricular dysfunction following a heart attack, taking Coreg on a daily basis decreases the chance of death by 23 percent and decreases the risk of another heart attack by 40 percent.
Although it is an effective heart medicine, Coreg cannot cure congestive heart failure or
high blood pressure.
