Research on Coreg and Impotence and Libido Effects
As with
Coreg, sexual problems have been reported only rarely with other
beta blockers. To date, however, research scientists and doctors have not been able to determine whether beta blockers cause sexual problems. On the other hand, they cannot say with certainty that beta blockers do not cause sexual problems either.
An interesting study was conducted on whether being aware that
impotence was a possible side effect with beta blockers would actually cause the sexual problem. What these researchers found was that men who knew that impotence was a side effect of beta blockers were more likely to develop the problem than those who were not aware that this was a possible side effect. Their conclusion was that "the knowledge and prejudice about side effects of beta blockers can produce
anxiety that may cause
erectile dysfunction." Interestingly, this study also found that a placebo (a "sugar pill" with no active ingredients) was just as effective as
sildenafil (
Viagra®) for reversing impotence in these men taking a beta blocker.
Suggestions for Coreg and Impotence and Libido Effects
It is impossible for your healthcare provider to know beforehand whether you will develop any sexual side effects while taking Coreg. In addition, if a person does develop sexual side effects, it is difficult to determine whether these problems are caused by another condition or by Coreg itself.
If you develop any sexual side effects while taking Coreg, talk to your healthcare provider. He or she may be able to diagnose the cause of your symptoms. Treatments are also available, such as an
erectile dysfunction medication. If your symptoms continue to be bothersome, or if your healthcare provider believes the medicine is causing your sexual side effects, he or she may recommend trying another medicine for
high blood pressure or
congestive heart failure.
