What Is Benicar Used For?

The prescription medication
Benicar® (olmesartan medoxomil) is used for lowering both systolic and diastolic blood pressures. Clinical studies have shown that the higher the dose, the greater the drop in blood pressure tends to be. By lowering blood pressure, Benicar can also decrease the risks that often occur with long-term hypertension (see Effects of High Blood Pressure).

However, it is important to keep in mind that Benicar is used only to help manage high blood pressure -- there is no cure for this condition.

At this time, there are no approved uses for Benicar for children. The medicine is only licensed to treat high blood pressure in adults.
