Benicar Medication Information
The prescription medication Benicar® (olmesartan medoxomil) is used to control high blood pressure in adults and children age six and older. Based on clinical studies, the drug has been shown to significantly lower both systolic and diastolic blood pressures.
Benicar is part of a class of drugs called angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). As the name implies, this medication blocks angiotensin II receptors. This action decreases the effectiveness of a chemical known as angiotensin II, which normally causes blood vessels to narrow (constrict). Because of this effect, Benicar causes blood vessels to relax, which can lower blood pressure.
This medicine comes as a tablet that is typically taken once a day, with or without food. You can take Benicar at any time of the day; however, it should be taken at the same time each day to maintain an even level in your system.
Information your healthcare provider needs to know about when prescribing Benicar includes other medications you taking and any other medical conditions you may have. This will help ensure that you are taking an appropriate amount.
