Benicar® (olmesartan medoxomil) is a prescription medication used for treating high blood pressure. It belongs to a class of drugs known as angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). Although most people respond well to Benicar, alternatives are available for those who experience side effects or who do not see an improvement in their blood pressure levels.
Besides Benicar, other types of ARBs include:
- Losartan (Cozaar®)
- Valsartan (Diovan®)
- Telmisartan (Micardis®)
- Candesartan cilexetil (Atacand®)
- Irbesartan (Avapro®).
Other medications can also be used to control high blood pressure. Some of the other types of drugs that can be used as alternatives to Benicar (and other ARBs) include:
- Beta blockers
- Calcium channel blockers (CCBs)
- Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors
- Alpha blockers
- Alpha-beta blockers
- Nervous system inhibitors
