What Is Avalide?

Avalide® (
irbesartan/HCTZ) is approved to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults age 18 and older. But what is Avalide and how does it work?

As a combination medication, Avalide contains irbesartan (Avapro®) and hydrochlorothiazide (Microzide®, Oretic®), or HCTZ for short. Each of these components works to lower blood pressure in different ways. The irbesartan component helps to improve blood flow by relaxing the blood vessels. The hydrochlorothiazide component helps to reduce the workload on the heart by reducing the volume of blood in the body.

Avalide comes in the form of a tablet and is typically taken once a day. Potential side effects include dizziness, tiredness, and nausea.

Clinical studies have shown that people who received Avalide had a greater decrease in blood pressure than people who received either irbesartan or HCTZ alone. By lowering blood pressure, the drug can decrease the risks that accompany long-term hypertension. However, it is not a cure for high blood pressure.
