Atenolol for Children

Atenolol (Tenormin®) is a prescription medicine that has been licensed to treat several conditions related to the heart and blood vessels. It is commonly used to control high blood pressure, relieve chest pain associated with angina, and improve survival following a heart attack.

Healthcare providers will not prescribe it for children, as atenolol has not been approved for this age group. However, the drug may be used "off-label" to treat several conditions in children. For example, it may be used in children with Marfan syndrome to slow the progression of aortic dilation (widening of the aorta).
