Atenolol (Tenormin®) is a prescription medicine that has been licensed to treat several conditions related to the heart and blood vessels, including high blood pressure. It is part of a class of drugs called beta blockers. Although most people respond well to the medicine, alternatives to atenolol are available for those who develop side effects or do not see an improvement in their condition.
Other beta blockers that are used as blood pressure medicines include:
- Metoprolol (Lopressor®)
- Propranolol (Inderal®)
- Metoprolol succinate (Toprol XL®)
- Labetalol (Trandate®).
There are also many other atenolol alternatives available. Some of these other blood pressure medication drug classes include:
- Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs)
- Calcium channel blockers (CCBs)
- Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors
- Alpha blockers
- Alpha-beta blockers
- Nervous system inhibitors
