Atacand Drug Interactions: An Introduction
Atacand® (
candesartan cilexetil) can potentially interact with a number of other medications. Some of these Atacand interactions can include:
- Diuretics, such as torsemide (Demadex®), furosemide (Lasix®), hydrochlorothiazide, and others
- Potassium supplements
- Potassium-sparing diuretics, such as spironolactone (Aldactone®), triamterene (Dyrenium®), and amiloride (Midamor®), among others
- Lithium (Eskalith®, Lithane®, Lithonate®, Lithotabs®).
Diuretics
When taking Atacand with a diuretic, your
blood pressure may decrease too much. This is more likely to occur when Atacand is first started. In order to decrease the chances of this interaction, your healthcare provider may change the dosages of either medicine, start you on a lower dose of Atacand, and/or monitor you more closely.
Potassium Supplements
If you are taking a potassium supplement and Atacand, the levels of potassium in your blood may become too high. This can cause serious problems. For your particular situation, talk to your healthcare provider about using potassium and Atacand together.
Potassium-Sparing Diuretics
If you are taking both Atacand and a potassium-sparing diuretic, your body may metabolize them differently than intended and/or increase the levels of potassium in your blood. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor your progress closely.
