Can I Buy Generic Atacand HCT?

Availability of Generic Atacand HCT

Generic Atacand HCT is available in the following strengths:

  • Candesartan/HCTZ 16 mg/12.5 mg -- which has 16 mg of Atacand and 12.5 mg of hydrochlorothiazide
  • Candesartan/HCTZ 32 mg/12.5 mg -- which has 32 mg of Atacand and 12.5 mg of hydrochlorothiazide
  • Candesartan/HCTZ 32 mg/25 mg -- which has 32 mg of Atacand and 25 mg of hydrochlorothiazide.

It is made by various manufacturers, such as:

  • Apotex
  • Mylan Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
  • Par Pharmaceutical Companies, Inc.

The version made by Par is actually an “authorized generic,” meaning that it is the actual brand-name medication that is just packaged and sold under a generic name. It is exactly the same as Atacand HCT in every way (it is even made by AstraZeneca), except it comes in a bottle with a generic name.

Is Generic Candesartan/HCTZ as Good as Atacand HCT?

All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns a rating to each one.

An “AB” rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent to a brand-name medication. All of the generic Atacand HCT versions currently available have an “AB” rating, meaning they should be equivalent to Atacand HCT.

However, generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients than the brand-name medication. This might include fillers, dyes, or other ingredients that may cause problems for people with allergies or sensitivities.
