Atacand HCT Uses

Atacand HCT consists of two medications -- Atacand and hydrochlorothiazide -- and is used to help control high blood pressure in adults. Atacand HCT works by relaxing the blood vessels to allow more blood to flow through them and by reducing the blood volume. Atacand HCT has been shown to cause a greater drop in blood pressure than if either Atacand or hydrochlorothiazide was used by itself. Atacand HCT has not been approved for use in children and there are currently no universally accepted off-label Atacand HCT uses.

Uses for Atacand HCT -- An Overview

Atacand HCT^® (candesartan cilexetil-hydrochlorothiazide) is a prescription medication that has been licensed to control high blood pressure (hypertension).

Atacand HCT for High Blood Pressure

A blood pressure reading consists of two numbers -- for example: 120/80. The top number is known as the systolic blood pressure and the bottom number is the diastolic blood pressure. High blood pressure is defined as an average blood pressure higher than 140/90, with multiple blood pressure readings.

Based on clinical studies, Atacand HCT has been shown to significantly lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The higher the dose of Atacand HCT, the greater the drop in blood pressure tended to be. By lowering blood pressure, Atacand HCT can decrease the risks that occur with long-term high blood pressure (see Effects of High Blood Pressure). However, Atacand HCT is not a cure for high blood pressure.
