Side Effects of Aliskiren-HCTZ

While most people do not experience side effects of HCTZ, commonly reported ones have included dizziness, coughing, and diarrhea. These side effects are generally mild and easily treated. However, some aliskiren-HCTZ side effects should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider, such seizures; difficulty breathing; and unexplained swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, or throat.

Side Effects of Aliskiren-HCTZ: An Overview

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with aliskiren-HCTZ (Tekturna HCT®). However, not everyone who takes the drug will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Serious Side Effects of Aliskiren-HCTZ

Aliskiren-HCTZ has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials. In these studies, one group of people received the real medication, while another group was given a placebo (a "sugar pill" that does not contain any active ingredients). As a result, it is possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the group who took the placebo.
Some side effects with aliskiren-HCTZ, while occurring infrequently, are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. Some of these serious side effects are so rare that it is difficult to know whether they are caused by aliskiren-HCTZ or other factors. These side effects include but are not limited to:
  • Eye pain or changes in vision
  • Swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, or throat (known medically as angioedema)
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting, which may be signs of low blood pressure (hypotension)
  • Kidney stones
  • Seizures
  • Decreased urination, which may be a sign of kidney problems
  • High blood sugar (hyperglycemia)
  • Gout
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, including:
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Swelling of the mouth or throat
    • Wheezing
    • Difficulty breathing.
